URL rules and recommendations to follow

I get asked weekly about the rules and recommendations for URL’s and the value of the URL if a business picks a domain over the one that you need to establish it as a brand. We all know that keywords in the URL hold some weight in Google’s algorithm. Yes, it is true therefore to pick a proper URL is important.

URL’s are basically address of a page and are categorized in three ways as:

  • SEO friendly URL’s
  • Permalinks
  • Custom URL’s

You can also say that the URL’s to be picked up in three simple ways like:

  • Do URL’s should contain Keywords? If yes, then how URL will help in click-through rate for this.
  • If keywords should be used then how long the URL should be. Because you cannot overload all the keywords in the URL.
  • Creating short URL influences the social metrics.

So, in order to pick the best URL for your website, you should consider the above points.

But keep in mind that to create URL’s, they should be user-friendly or SEO friendly. You need to follow certain rules and recommendations for creating a user-friendly URL:

Lowercase Alphabets

In order to have an attractive and user-friendly URL, we need to use lower case alphabets.

All the search engines are not case sensitive, but if you having lower case alphabet URL, it will be seen differently by some of the search engines. For Eg: www.google.com/digital marketing

No space between Words

You should not use any space between the words in URL. An effective URL should not have any spaces between the words, as not all the search engines interpret spaces between words.

Use hyphen and not underscore

Not all the search engines interpret special characters as “_(underscore)” or “%(percentile) or “+ (plus)”, so you should use “- (hyphen)” character to separate words.

No stop words

Words such as “of” or “or” or “the” etc, if used in URL can hinder SEO efforts. These words can interfere the SEO efforts because they use up a good amount of space while creating URL. In WordPress permalinks, plugins provide these options and are used automatically.

URL should be short

You should keep your URL’s short so that it is easy to remember, short and is shown fully in search results. URL  should be 100 characters after the stop words are removed. While URL should be descriptive but at the same time, it should be easier for the user to copy-paste.

URL should be descriptive

While URL should be short, it should be descriptive also. But we should keep this in mind that URL should not be too long and meaningless. Rather than using numbers or figures, you should use real words and should not use special characters

You should remove tracking parameters

If you are using tracking parameters in the internal URL, for any kind of marketing campaigns, you should use canonical tags and point it to the URL without the tracking- this may avoid duplicate issues.
